John Dalton
John E. Dalton, Jr. practices in the areas of Bankruptcy, Creditors’ Rights, Collections, Business Law, Real Estate, Wills and Estate Planning, and Probate. John’s practice includes the representation of financial institutions, including banks and credit unions, other mortgage lenders, as well as businesses that provide in-store financing to customers in collection of debts through actions in Georgia state courts and Georgia federal courts. Such representation includes practicing in bankruptcy courts by drafting and filing of Proofs of Claim, Objections to Confirmation, Reaffirmation Agreements, Motions for Relief from Stay, and Adversary Proceedings. John also provides services to financial institutions and other mortgage lenders in foreclosure proceedings.
John provides a full range of services to clients who are selling, purchasing, or refinancing real property. He has extensive experience in title examination and review. He assists clients with their real estate closing needs, including interactions with mortgage lenders and realtors, to ensure a stress-free closing experience.
John also practices in the area of Wills and Estate Planning whereby John provides consultation and drafting of Last Wills and Testaments, Trust documents, Financial Powers of Attorney, and Advanced Directives for Health Care. John also assists clients during those difficult times after the loss of a loved one with estate administration, whether it includes probate or non-probate issues.
John provides services to clients interested in forming business entities by filing the required documents with the Secretary of State and by providing consultation services to ensure that the resulting business is operating within the requirements of Georgia law.
John earned his Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Political Science from Valdosta State University in 1978. He also earned his Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degree from Valdosta State University in 1997. John received his Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree in 2000 from the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University where he received the American Bar Association-Bureau of National Affairs, Inc. Award for Excellence in the Study of Labor and Employment Law and the Center for Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction Excellence for the Future Award in the Study of Labor Law. After law school, John practiced law with Steve Gupton for fourteen years before both Steve and John merged their practices with Coleman Talley LLP in 2014.
John was born, raised, and currently resides in Valdosta, Georgia with his wife, the former Donna Stewart. John and Donna have three sons. John is a member of Northside Baptist Church in Valdosta where he has served as Chairman of the Deacons, Sunday School teacher, Constitution and By-Laws Committee Chairman, Parliamentarian, and Upward Basketball coach.
Currently, John is a member of the State Bar of Georgia, the Valdosta Bar Association, where he previously served as Treasurer, and the Middle District of Georgia Bankruptcy Law Institute.
